Remote access via SSH

All our machines can only be accessed remotely via an SSH (Secure Shell) client using protocol version 2 (SSH2). Such a client is installed by default on most Linux distributions. If you wish to use Windows, a suitable client can be downloaded for free from the UIUC Campus Software site:

  1. Follow this link and select "Software Webstore."
  2. Log in with your NetID and password.
  3. Choose "Search by product titles" and select "SSH for Windows Workstation"
  4. If you click "Get it" and perform all the steps, you will be able to download this program for free.

Alternatively (and even quicker), you can download the program here (earlier version). Note: only accessible from the UIUC domain. To download from an external location, use VPN.

After installing and starting the SSH client, select "Quick Connect". Enter the hostname and your user name. Do not change any other settings (i.e. port number or authentication method). When asked if you want to save the host key of the new machine, respond "yes".
